William Choong PhD; Senior Fellow, the ISEAS – Yusof Ishak Institute

Dr. William Choong is a Senior Fellow at the ISEAS – Yusof Ishak Institute and the managing editor of Fulcrum, the Institute’s commentary platform that publishes analyses on Southeast Asia and its broader environment. From 2013 to 2020, he served as the Shangri-La Dialogue Senior Fellow for Asia-Pacific Security at the International Institute for Strategic Studies, where he contributed to organizing the annual Shangri-La Dialogue in Singapore.

Dr. Choong previously had a distinguished career with The Straits Times, Singapore’s leading English-language newspaper, where he worked as a Senior Writer, specializing in opinion pieces and editorials on defense, diplomacy, and U.S. policy in Asia. He earned his Ph.D. from the Australian National University with a dissertation focused on U.S.-China deterrence.
